Starfox 2 for the Super Nintendo was announced late 1994 after this a release date was set for July 1995. A beta version of the game was shown at Consumer Electronics Show (CES) held in Las Vegas some time in March 1995. It is believed that at least twelve prototypes exist with three different versions of the game between them, one being very close to the final version.

The original Starfox used a special chip called the Super FX this was used to help performance and display more polygons on screen. For Starfox 2 Argonaut Games had bigger plans a new improved Super FX2 chip was designed and going to be the first game to use the new technology.

It is a complete mystery as to why Starfox 2 never hit shelves it clearly would have been a hit and the game was so close to completion. It is possible that Nintendo wanted Starfox 2 dropped so instead Starfox 2 would become a N64 launch title (Starfox 64) as the N64 was not that far off. There is a number of possible reasons so your guess is as good as mine.
