Home
Entertainment Suppliers (HES) games were distributed
in the late 80's and early 90's from Sydney in Australia.
HES games were very popular at the time because they
were so cheap and most of them contained at least four
games.
Almost all HES games were released in plastic cases
like video rental boxes. They have a large cover with
the artwork and title of the game in each one this can
be taken out and turned around and on the other side
is the instructions. Some games such as Duck Maze and
Chiller used both plastic and card boxes. There are
two types of card boxes the American Video Entertainment
(AVE) box with a HES sticker stuck over the AVE logo
and the proper HES ones which are gold much like Tengen's
later boxes.
HES them self's never developed a single game they merely
repackaged unlicensed games from Sachen, Bit Corp, Tengen,
American Video Entertainment and American Video Cartridge
Inc. They did how ever come up with a GameKey clone
the Unidapter which
uses the two cartridge method to trick the NES into
thinking any NTSC game is PAL and vice versa.
The original
batch of HES cartridges had no connectors or adaptors
and can run without the need of a licensed game. This
later changed because Nintendo had the NES hardware
updated on later models which caused many comparability
problems. Due to this the piggy back and dongle cartridges
were born.
Piggy back cartridges
have a 72pin port sticking out the end of it similar
to a game genie this is where you plug in a licensed
cartridge to run the game. This is done to take the
regional code of the original game and of course giving
100% compatibility much like the GameKey/Unidapter.
Dongle cartridges are similar to the piggy back except
the 72pin port is not built in to the cartridge, it
is attached with a type of ribbon cable.
